Eminent theatre personality, producer-director-writer Nadira Zaheer Babbar will be seen in a new play after a long gap of seven years.

"She was one of the most large-hearted women I had ever met. She was all heart… I worked with her only once, for my serialisation of short stories on national television called Kirdaar.

Nadira was the first sophisticated vamp in Hindi cinema, at a time when women were expected to look demure and do only positive roles. Nadira made her foray into Bollywood in the 50s with films like Aan (1952) featuring Dilip Kumar and Shree 420 (1955) with Raj Kapoor , and gave new meaning and depth to the character of a vamp in several films, playing the confident, often sensuous young woman who was not afraid to get what she wanted.

Mumbai: Filmstars and friends remembered veteran actress Nadira, who died today, as a "talented" and a "fine" person, who had been living the life of a recluse and was often nostalgic about her youth.

Yesteryear actress Nadira died after a prolonged illness at a hospital here early this morning. She was 73.

The condition of yesteryears film actress Nadira, who has been admitted to Bhatia Hospital at Grant Road in South Central Mumbai following a stroke last week, is stated to be stable but critical tonight.

The funeral will be held Thursday evening, former president of Cine Artistes Association and fellow actor Chandrashekhar said.
