Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon 2006 [Gallery]
Bollywood stars Abhishek Bachchan and Rani Mukherjee, sporting yellow t-shirts and track suits, stole the show at Mumbai Marathon , which was otherwise dominated by African atheletes on Sunday. The event drew celebrities and film stars in good numbers who participated in a seven-km long dream run. Among them were industrialists Anil Ambani and Anand Mahindra, former cricketers Mohammed Azh-aruddin and Vinod Kambli, film actors Tara Sharma, Meeta Vashisht, actor-turned-MP Vinod Khanna, Rahul Bose and others. Pop singer Sunita Rao and film director Nagesh Kuknoorr participated on behalf of the Spastic Society of India, lending a helping hand to participants of wheelchair category. Anil Ambanis wife and former actress Tina was seen shaking hands with senior citizens, and she was joined by her mother-in-law Kokilaben Ambani. The event began at 7.00 am at Azad Maidan opposite Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus. Street lights were still on and a cool freshening breez from the sea was blowing when the half-marathon started. Soon, both Abhishek and Rani climbed the platform to flag off the senior citizens run. Their presence among the elderly lot in a special enclosure whipped a frenzy among the senior citizens; one of them even sang Abhisheks top numbers Dus Bahane and Kajra re from the stands. At least 2700 senior citizens ran for Harmony, a project for the elderly designed by Tina Ambani, on a 5-km stretch. The run was divided into five categories: the longest was of 42.195 km, the half marathon of 21.097 km, while the dream run was of 7 km. The senior citizens run spanned 5 km, while the wheelchair event was of 3.5 km. The wheelchair event, which was introduced last year, was again a huge success and attracted some coulourful participants, too. About 27,000 runners participated in the marathon this year.
